[...] The elegance of latent variable models for investigating the internal structure of [psychological] measurements, along with the heavy time investments required to become proficient in using them, may often bias a researcher into paying comparatively little attention to the external validity of measurement tools [...] Test evaluators who sanctify structural validity at the expense of external validity can become blind guides who “strain out a gnat but swallow a camel” (Matthew 23:34).

Some people conflate the terms grief and depression [...] Depression is a mental disorder. Grief is not. Bereaved people are sad because they miss a person they love, a person who added light and color and warmth to their world. They feel like the light has been turned off and they aren’t sure how to turn it on again. Depressed people are sad because they see themselves and/or the world as fundamentally flawed, inadequate, or worthless. They feel like the world has no light or color or warmth. There is no light to turn on.

If morality can be considered the social behavior “accepted” by a society, ethics is the verbal justification of what is correct and what it should be [...] according to the ideals of a culture. It is a philosophical discipline that uses language to support prescriptions and prohibitions [...] The variant known as bioethics highlights the relational role of this “justificatory language game,” by proposing that norms should come not from the monological derivation of a system of thought, but from the dialogical and participatory appropriation of conventions.
